Short answer: both convert to arginine and support nitric-oxide production, but citrulline malate pairs in an additional energy-cycle compound while delivering less citrulline per weight than pure citrulline HCl.
Citrulline HCl: the more concentrated form
L-Citrulline HCl converts to arginine in the kidneys — a more efficient absorption route than taking arginine directly — and delivers a higher proportion of actual citrulline per given weight.
Citrulline Malate: citrulline plus an energy-cycle compound
Citrulline paired with malic acid, an energy-cycle intermediate. A given weight of citrulline malate contains less actual citrulline than the same weight of pure citrulline HCl, since part of the weight is the malate itself.
What this means for judging total citrulline content
Two citrulline sources on a label sounds more comprehensive than one — but without milligram amounts, it's not possible to know the actual total citrulline delivered versus a simpler, single-source formula at a disclosed dose.
